One of my most recent projects is this hub level, which I created from scratch using royalty-free assets from Fab and Itch.io. I created the basic terrain of the level using the landscape tools in Unreal Engine 5, making a natural, hilly landscape that matches the chosen setting. I then gathered foliage assets according to the color scheme I had decided on from the mentioned sites, making sure their art styles matched. Once I had the necessary foliage assets, I populated the level using Unreal's foliage tools, using big, dense brushes for the grass and smaller ones for the trees, bushes, and rocks. I cut out a path from the foliage and populated it with small pebbles to make a gravel pathway between the portals, which I also made using the foliage tools. Once I was done with the basic structure of the level, I found some decaying ruins on two different asset packs to decorate the level further, and also found a portal that matched the theme. I shifted the color of the portal texture to pink and green using Photoshop to differentiate the pathways to the different levels, and placed down some torches with an animated fire effect to make the scene more dynamic. Finally, I searched for a matching skybox and worked out the lighting, going for warm, yellow tones to emphasize the natural, overgrown aesthetic. My goal with this project was to make a stylistically cohesive scene with a limited assortment of assets, which I learned a lot about after testing a variety of assets, removing a lot of them after deciding the didin't fit the theme.
